Insurance Woes

I graduated from physical therapy mid Dec. But still have pain on my ankle when I Squat, during Yoga Warrior pose or in skiing pose. Looks like my skiing days are over. Have a doctor appointment end of this month to check it out. In the mean time, Insurance company, Aetna, thinks that my Dec physical therapy session was unwarranted and hence it won’t pay. Now I have to provide them proof that I was still aching in Dec even though my pain hasn’t gone totally yet! God! I hate phone calls with the insurance companies. Feels like I am part of the cast of “Sicko”. Ankle woes continues………….

Hey, from here, even getting partial coverage doesn’t sound that bad :)

Kidding.. I know how it goes. I remember getting a balance due letter from United healthcare in 2005(don’t remember exactly) for a doctor visit in 1999. They threatened me with collection agency, I did not bother to respond and the case died on its own. Well.. that’s what I think anyways :)

Just came across your blog thanks to the wonders of Google. Have read through all your posts with interest as I broke my ankle (lateral malleolus) on New Year’s eve snowboarding in Canada. I too had a flight back home (to the UK) and I am now in a permanent cast.

It’s been good to read your posts to understand a little more of what to expect, but it has also brought me back to reality as I was hoping to just start doing things normally in a week or so!

Sorry to hear that you broke your ankle. Different people recover differenly. So I hope you recover fast enough to back on the snowboard.

As Maghin said above, thanks to Google, I landed on to your blog. Quite an interesting experience. I had my ankle injury in December… Its over five weeks now. I had a surgery and now I am recovering on permanent cast.

As you said, different people take varying amount of time to recover… Dunno when I will get back to normalcy (limpless walking).

Venkat! Hope you recover fast! Keep up the physical therapy excercise that is the way to limpless walking!

I also came across your blog on google. I fractured my ankle Dec. 28 ice skating. I had surgery (a plate and 8 screws) to repair the fibula break, and to repair a lrage chip off the tibia. It has been nice reading your blog. I too, assumed I’d be walking around once I was in the “boot” but maybe it won’t be so soon. I was in splint type cast for 2 weeks post-surgery, now I’m in a permanent cast for 4 more weeks. My question is, how do you keep from getting weak (overall, the entire body), when you’re on the couch elevating the foot most of the day? I can’t stay up on crutches for much longer than 5-10 minutes at a time.

      Hi Kate
I didn’t do much for upper body. All my strength training started only after the cast came off. I pretty much walked around the house on my crutches(thatz when i realized how poor my upper body strength is) and that improved my upper body strength. Other than that it was in an elevated position.

OK, thanks. It’s just I now get tired and a little winded just going up the stairs. Maybe I just need to be schlepping around more on my crutches. Or maybe a daily bath would get me some exercise! Also, I was assuming that after 8 weeks post-surgery of elevation and crutches, that I’d be able to return to work and be on my feet. I’m thinking now after reading yours that this might be unrealistic. I’m supposed to be running a youth leadership training program 20 hours/week (the other 20 is desk work).

Kate, each case is different, so let us hope that you would be up and walking soon! Of course you will know that only after getting off the cast. Good Luck!

So good to be on this site as I had a surgery on January 5 to remove a benign tumor in my ankle, surgeon had to break the ankle bone to get to it. Three screws later(permanent) and I now wearing a air cast boot for another 3 weeeks. Then, physio will start in earnest. I am very anxious to get the physio started. My poor leg has been thru alot as I ruptured my achilles tendon in Sept/08 and had to wear a cast for 12 weeks. It took a while, but I recovered wonderfully. I have to remind myself of that and remind myself that equally important is lots of rest, water, good food, good attitude. I am in Canada, have great insurance for supplies/physio/massage. Will not go back to work until I feel stronger and know how much time the physio will take. I am a Marital/addictions therapist and will have to be sure how many hours I can work realistically before I start booking clients again.. Good luck all…..

How interesting to read the diary of your ankle fracture. On my way to work I skidded on ice and broke my ankle, tibia and fibula at the end of december and had surgery to insert metal plate and screws. I am still in a full leg cast and will not be having it removed for another 3 weeks yet (8 weeks in total). Like others who have commented, I too thought that once the cast is off I would be walking about as before after a little physio. This obviously will not be the case.
Was interesting to read the troubles you’ve suffered mirrored my own, the sleepless nights, anti blood clotting injections (which im still doing), general feeling of uselessness and hard skin on hands…so unladylike!!!
Thanks for your useful blog it has helped me be a little more realistic with regards to my future healing process!

As I have said many times, each person is different. When I was on cast, many people told me that they were up and running once they were out of their cast. But that was not my case. So let us hope you heal fast and start walking quickly Zoe. Get well soon!
